Summary
What problems do you encounter most frequently in children?
For what reasons are children overweight?
Can one prevent a child from becoming overweight?
Should an overweight child be put on a proper diet?
No, they need to reacquire good eating habits, the aim being to stabilise their weight so that with growth they finish up with a lower BMI (Body Mass Index).
You have to explain to a child that they need to eat 4 balanced meals without snacking between meals.
You have to insist that they eat a lot of fruit (5/day) – which bring fibre – and drink water rather than sweetened drinks.
At teatime an apple, slice of bread and a square of chocolate are better for them than a chocolate pastry.
You have to encourage children to eat slowly so that their brain has time to analyse that it has arrived at satiation.
Last but not least, parents should encourage their children to take up a sport of some kind on a regular basis and, if possible, share a physical activity with them (swimming, cycling, walking) to reduce the amount of time they spend in front of the television or computer and get them moving!
