His first “words” are written on his face
Establishing contact with a newborn baby
Expressions of well-being
How to promote communication with your baby?
The first communication between your baby and yourself takes place well before birth.
His sensorial capacities already enable him to feel your caresses, hear your voice and feel your presence.
The first look
Coming out of nowhere, this first look stares at you and goes right through you, it provokes a feeling inside of you that makes you a mother – or father – it’s coming face to face with the real baby.
Seeing him enables you to make your expectations a reality and give a meaning to everything you have felt.
Your baby’s look reflects his antenatal experience. He is finally in front of the person who gave him his well-being.
Your voice and your arms
Your voice reassures him and humanises him, he needs your arms to feel protected in the event of distress.
Responding to demands
Physical closeness, skin-to-skin, body-to-body, sleeping in your room for the first few months enable him to adapt to this new world and to separate from it more easily later on.
Your baby is completely dependent on you, the more you respond to his demands, notably by breast and bottle feeding, the easier it will be for him to confront difficulties and become independent.
