Going on holiday with your baby

Where to take your baby?

4 questions questions for Anne-Bérangère NADIM, a pediatric nurse

From what age can I take my newborn on holiday?

A healthy newborn baby can travel from their third week of life.

However, your baby is very fragile at this age, and above all needs sleep and calm. He will not benefit from travelling to the other side of the world!

In addition, some vaccines cannot be given to newborns (yellow fever: from six months, Hepatitis A: from one year).

For more information, please consult your doctor.

Can I take my baby to the mountains?

The pure mountain air is excellent for your baby.

However, it’s best to avoid taking a baby less than one year old above 1,200 metres in altitude, as his eardrums are still too fragile.

Similarly, do not take a child under two above 1,800 metres in altitude.

With an older child, take care from 3,000 metres, as breathing can become difficult and children can dehydrate rapidly.

Whatever the age of your child, it’s a good idea to take them to the doctor before you go to check the health of their ears.

What age can I take my baby to the seaside?

Avoid taking a baby under one to the beach
.

At this age, they will not enjoy it that much, and will also be exposed to various bacteria in the sand.

In addition, children under three should not be exposed to the sun: 80% of skin damage caused by the sun occurs before the age of 18...

Bathing in the sea should also be avoided before the age of one, as babies have not yet had all their vaccinations and could be contaminated by certain microbes.

How can I prevent my baby from getting travel sickness?

Before you leave, ask your doctor for advice on the best way to deal with travel sickness according to the age of your baby and the journey you are going to take.

Feed your baby before you go; he will be less likely to be sick if his stomach is not empty. Stop regularly to give him fresh air.
