The role of midwives
Mrs Drevault, midwife at Saint Michel Sainte Anne maternity hospital in Quimper, France
Mrs Potel, independent midwife in the Paris region, France
Midwives are key figures: they have undergone medical training and will accompany you throughout your pregnancy*.
The duties performed by midwives in France include:
• Preparation for the birth and parenthood: they give birth preparation classes.
• Prenatal monitoring*: they carry out ultrasounds and screenings for risk factors and pathologies.
• Labour: they ensure that labour goes smoothly; they are also authorised to give first aid resuscitation and to prescribe examinations.
• Post-natal monitoring: they make sure that you are doing well with your baby in the days following the birth.
• Perineal re-education.
*As part of a normal pregnancy, excluding any pathology
