Changes in the body and consequences on the skin
During pregnancy, your skin changes. Hormonal changes and the increased size of the uterus, plus weight gain, subject your skin to intense mechanical tension. Your skin seems slacker, less toned, and stretch marks may appear. Hormonal changes also cause the appearance of little fatty deposits which give the appearance of localised areas of cellulite.
The post-partum complexion
After giving birth, there is a reduction in the pregnancy hormones which had a beneficial effect on your skin, and this change, added to general fatigue, can explain why new mums often have dry skin and a “muddied” complexion.
Don’t worry, all these symptoms will fade, and eventually disappear.
Little skin blemishes
Areas of pigmentation, such as the mask of pregnancy, or the brown line (linea nigra) on the stomach are caused by hormones and can sometimes remain for a few months before disappearing.
Red marks, known as stellar angiomas, can appear during pregnancy, but will usually disappear by themselves.
