A cold is a contagious viral infection which affects the respiratory tracts. In most cases, the infection spontaneously dies down after a few days (4 to 10 days).
Infants may catch up to 8 colds a year because their defence mechanisms are still too immature. But every time babies catch a cold, their immunity is strengthened and as time goes by they are increasingly able to resist the many viruses around them.
The symptoms of the common cold are as follows:
• A blocked or runny nose
• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Baby is grumpy, is off his food and sleeps badly
• A high temperature, in some cases
• Regurgitations, in some cases
If your baby has these symptoms, ask your doctor for advice.
