Skin irritations - Introduction
What are the causing factors?
What are the signs?
What are the general measures that should be followed?
What are the stages of skin repair?
What sort of care is needed?
Four major stages that overlap (Jurk 2003).
During phase 1, the vascular stage, certain blood cells (platelets) assemble around the wound and release molecules that attract inflammatory cells (like neutrophils or macrophages) to the site of healing (phase 2). These cells both “cleanse” the wound and initiate the healing process.
Phase 3 is the cell proliferation phase. Different skin cells (fibroblasts, epidermal keratinocytes) invade the site of the wound and multiply in order to rebuild the different layers of the skin.
Lastly, the remodelling phase (phase 4) sets in for the skin’s outer covering to return to normal (Ann Dermatol 2005, Jurk 2003).
