The birth of language
Between 0 and 1 month : the birth of communication
Between 2 to 6 months : a cascade of babbling
Between 6 to 9 months : repeated syllables
Between 9 to 12 months : his first words!
Between 15 and 18 months: a thirst for learning
Between 18 and 24 months: his vocabulary explodes
Towards 3 years: I can talk like a grown-up
At birth your baby does not yet know how to talk but he already communicates: with his eyes, his postures, his facial expressions and gestures or by crying he expresses how he feels and interacts with you. At this stage his potential is unlimited: naturally predisposed to acquire an articulate language, he has the ability to learn any language and pronounce any sounds. What is even more amazing is that he can also distinguish different languages by their melody. Little by little, his aptitude will diminish for concentrating on learning his mother tongue.
From the first look to to the first phrase, your interactions with your baby are essential in guiding him along the road to language: you are the one who gives a meaning to the sounds he produces and it is also you who makes him want to repeat them for the pleasure of seeing you react and respond to his requests. From the first days of his life it is thus essential to talk to your baby as much as possible and babble with him: by offering him an enabling environment you will give him every opportunity to progress quickly and harmoniously.
The acquisition of a language happens at a very different pace according to the baby: some can already pronounce a few words at one year while others are still experimenting in an incomprehensible baby talk at two years. So respect your child's progress! Stimulate him and encourage him, but do not put any pressure on him: the higher your expectations, the bigger the risk there is that he will adopt an attitude of refusal.
