Development of your baby's sight

What does my baby see?

In the uterus, the visual system is the last to develop.

At the end of pregnancy, it functions but the foetus does not have much opportunity to use its sense of sight.

Newborns can see, but not very well.

Their eyes do not adjust very well to distances and their visual acuity is very weak (1/60th of that of an adult) and their field of vision is narrow. Ocular motricity and 3D vision are not yet under control: they see in a blur, squint often, do not perceive details and are most interested in highly contrasting colours.

Nonetheless, their vision is good enough for them, especially when it comes to seeing you! They can also focus on an object, reproduce a gesture or follow a mobile that is moving slowly in front of their eyes.
