Avocado

Origin

From the Lauraceae family the avocado (Persea Gratissima) is a medium size tree (10m) with dark green oval leaves.

It produces fruit in the shape of a pear – the avocado. Avocados can remain on the branch for several months without ripening: it is only when they are picked that their flesh becomes tender. Beneath their thick green skin is a large avocado seed surrounded by smooth, fatty and scented flesh which can be used in many culinary preparations, both sweet and savoury.

Avocados have been consumed for more than 10,000 years in Central America, where they originate from, and were considered a sacred fruit and a symbol of life by the Mayas and the Aztecs.
Much used in Mesoamerican food, they were also appreciated for their cosmetic and medicinal beneficial effects: they were used for moisturising and protecting the skin and nourishing the hair as well as for improving digestion or fighting against fever.

In the 16th century avocados were introduced into Europe by the Spanish Conquistadors under the name of “Pear of America”. However, the French did not adopt them until some 400 years later: it was only during the 1960’s that avocados appeared on our tables and they did not become generalised until 1980.
At the same time scientists have not ceased to discover new properties for the skin derived from avocados and now they are a privileged ingredient in cosmetology.
