An Amazonian treasure
Botanically close to the cocoa plant, the Cupuaçu tree (Theobroma grandiflorum) grows in the middle of the tropical Amazon rainforest.
In Greek, Theobroma literally means “food of the gods”: a nod to the oval fruit that this tree produces. Effectively, they enclose a white and creamy flesh that is extremely aromatic with a uniquely fragrant flavour, both sweet and acidy. The local population really enjoy this fruit and make a number of sweet treats from it.
Cupuaçu contains another treasure: its seeds concealed in the heart of the pulp. When the fruit is completely ripe, it spontaneously falls to the ground where it can be picked up and its precious seeds removed.
Once their husk has been removed they are dried then mechanically pressed to extract a natural creamy butter, the exceptional virtues of which have been known for thousands of years by the Indian tribes.
A protective concentrate
The Cupuaçu butter used by Mustela is produced in Brazil in its raw form. It is then refined in France according to Laboratoires Expanscience’s know-how to obtain an immaculately white odourless butter endowed with remarkable cosmetic properties.
We ensure that the fruit used by our suppliers is gathered in a sustainable way, i.e. without damaging the trees or interfering with the ecosystem. The Amazonian communities that gather Cupuaçu work in an environment of sustainable forest management (FSC) and get a regular income from it.
Mustela chose Cupuaçu butter for its exceptional capacity to retain water on the skin: it thus protects it very effectively from dryness. Its creamy texture instantly melts on contact with the skin and leaves it feeling soft and satiny without leaving a shiny film on the surface.
