Each and every day, baby learns and progresses. What is the best way to support this everyday progress?
In order to grow and progress, baby needs support and encouragement from his parents: this is how he will gain self-confidence!

Lying on his play mat, baby is unable to catch hold of the toys that are dangling above him. How should you react to his difficulty?
There are a lot of difficulties in everyday life for a baby who still has reduced capabilities. To avoid him getting discouraged, he needs to feel that you support him and have confidence in him.

What is the topic of Mustela Babies’ Day in 2009?
This year Mustela Babies’ Day is putting an emphasis on communication between baby and his parents during the first few months of his life.

When does baby become sensitive to communication with his mother and those around him?
Baby’s senses develop in the uterus and they become sharper and sharper by the end of the pregnancy: he can feel your caresses, hear your voice and feel your presence.

How do you know whether baby is feeling well or not?
A baby’s behaviour is an exact reflection of what he feels inside. By being attentive to his facial expressions and his actions, not just when he cries, you will quickly learn how to decipher his moods and his needs.

What is essential for a baby’s development?
It is thanks to his contact with you that baby learns and progresses the most: by observing you, imitating you and interacting with you he gradually progresses towards his independence.

What is the best way of talking to baby for the most fruitful communication?
Talking to baby with your own words is the best way of stimulating his language learning: he will gradually become thoroughly familiar with your terminology and tone of voice to the point of using them himself.

What is baby sensitive to at first when you talk to him?
Long before he understands the exact meanings of words or knows how to talk baby knows via your tone of voice whether your intentions towards him are good or bad.

What is the best way to reassure your baby when he is sad or anxious?
You arms are the most reassuring refuge for your baby, in particular during the first months of his life. In the event of distress, he will feel protected and consoled when you cuddle him.

Can your baby already feel your caresses during your pregnancy?
The foetus’s sense of touch develops from the 7th week of pregnancy. So do not hesitate to caress or massage your belly: your baby will feel every one of your strokes.

During pregnancy can baby hear your voice?
From the 7th month of pregnancy, your baby is able to react to sound by making movements. The muffled sound of your heartbeat, daddy’s deep voice and all the sounds of everyday life accompany him in your womb.

Should you respond to all the demands of the newborn baby?
During the first few months of his life your baby is completely dependent on you. Automatically responding to his demands is thus the only way to reassure him and calm him: this is how he will gradually gain self-confidence and become independent.

Can baby sleep in his parents’ room for the first few months of his life?
It is recommended for baby to sleep in the same room as his parents for the first few months: reassured by your presence, he will sleep more peacefully and adapt more easily to the new world he is discovering.

Can baby be undressed during the first months of his life for skin-to-skin contact?
Naked against your skin, baby will regain various sensations that accompanied him in your womb: he will hear your heart beat, feel your warmth and smell your odour. These moments of shared pleasure promote parents and their baby coming together and interacting.

Should you limit the amount of time baby spends in your arms during the first few months?
After suddenly being separated from the maternal body at birth, baby has a virtually vital need of physical contact: there is no need to count the number of cuddles or the number of hours he spends in your arms!

At around what age does baby start laughing for the first time?
At around 4 months of age baby begins to burst out laughing and manifest his happiness and his well-being.

At around what age does baby smile for the first time?
Baby’s first smiles generally appear at around one month of age, first of all during his sleep then during waking moments of calm and well-being.

In general, in what circumstances does baby smile for the first time?
Baby’s first smiles appear during his sleep when he memorises enjoyable events of his day and his communication with those around him.

At around what age does baby begin to gurgle?
At around two months of age baby begins to gurgle to demonstrate his satisfaction and well-being.

What is the first type of sound that baby makes?
Baby’s first babbles are mainly made up of vowels: “a” appears first, closely followed by the well-known “aheu” which will gradually become “areuh”.

At around what age does baby begin to say “pa-pa”, “da-da” or “ma-ma”?
After having mastered vowels then consonants, baby begins to repeat his favourite syllables at around eight months of age: you will thus have the pleasure of hearing him say “da-da” or “ma-ma” for the first time. For him they are not yet real words but vocal exercises.

At around what age does baby pronounce his first words?
It is on average around the age of one year that baby pronounces his first words. From then on he will gradually babble more or less structured language.

Before being able to speak how does baby get himself understood?
Well before mastering spoken language baby uses body language: his behaviour is an exact reflection of what he feels inside. Attentive observation of his actions and attitudes will enable you to understand his moods, his desires and his needs.

During the first few months of life, what physical movements does baby make to manifest his happiness?
From birth baby can make harmonious movements with his arms and hands to demonstrate his well-being. After two months of age, he gesticulates with his arms when he is content, then with his feet at around three months of age.

During the first months of life, how does baby show that he needs something?
Before the acquisition of language, crying is the only way for baby to express a need, a difficulty or feeling unwell.

Does a newborn baby cry for no reason?
A baby never cries for no reason: crying serves to call to ask for help when he is incapable of facing something alone or when he needs something (for example if he is hungry, tired or uncomfortable).

In general what is the significance of crying for a baby under six months of age?
When your baby cries, it is because he needs your help to face up to a situation or to reply to a need (food, tiredness, physical contact, etc.). Before the acquisition of language, crying is the only means at his disposal for calling you in the event of distress.

Is a baby necessarily suffering when he cries?
Baby’s crying is a genuine language: it does not just serve to express his pain, but also his needs (food, change of diaper, tiredness, etc.) or how he feels inside (agitation, discomfort, anxiety, etc).

At around what age does baby begin to manifest his fear of being apart from you?
Between 6 and 8 months, baby becomes aware that he is a separate being from his mother and his surroundings. It is at this time that the first fears of separation appear: baby manifests his distress when mother goes out or his fear in the presence of strangers.

Towards what age does baby begin throwing tantrums?
Between 12 and 18 months baby begins to differentiate between his desire and that of his parents and to have his own desires. When baby cannot obtain what he wants, his anger sometimes explodes in an impressive manner – it is a necessary stage and quite normal!

What type of crying is easy to identify from the first weeks of life?
Before the acquisition of language, crying enables baby to express his various needs: hunger, tiredness, discomfort, pain, etc. Each type of crying makes a characteristic sound that parents learn to recognise within a few months. Intense and piercing crying when he is in pain is generally the first type of crying to be recognized from the first weeks of life.

Should a baby be left to cry during the first few months of his life?
During the first few months of life, crying is the only means that baby has at his disposal for showing he needs something. Always responding to his crying is essential to reassuring him: he will thus gradually gain confidence in both himself and the world that surrounds him.

When baby cries your first reflex is no doubt to take him into your arms. But what other action is important for helping him?
From birth baby appreciates your reassuring words. Even if it is sometimes difficult to put words to the cause of his distress while he is crying, do not hesitate to explain to him what has upset him once he has calmed down. You will thus give a sense to his crying.

What toy will help to stimulate baby’s sight and touch from the first few months of life?
Bright and coloured, play mats help to stimulate baby from the very first months. Lying on his back he can touch the different textures of the mat or contemplate then grab the little toys dangling over his head.

What sound accompanies the foetus during the entire pregnancy?
Throughout the entire pregnancy baby is rocked by the muffled sound of his mother’s heartbeat. After birth, this sound will remain particularly reassuring for him.

From what age does the foetus begin to react to external sounds?
Hearing is one of the foetus’s developed senses. From 7 months, his hearing is so keen that he can hear sounds coming from the outside and react to them with movements.

During the pregnancy, which sound frequencies are the most reassuring for the foetus?
During his entire intra-uterine life, baby is rocked by the muffled sound of the maternal heartbeat. In the same vein as this, all low sounds have a soothing effect on him whereas, on the contrary, high frequencies may stress him.

During the pregnancy, which sounds risk stressing baby?
During the pregnancy, high frequency sounds can be stressful for the foetus: car horns, alarms, doorbells, motorbikes accelerating are all ear-piercing noises which provoke sudden movements of your baby.

During the pregnancy, which sounds can be reassuring for baby?
Low frequencies like that of the wind in the trees have a soothing effect on baby during his intra-uterine life.

During the very first months, by what does baby recognize you?
During the first few months baby’s sight is still imperfect but his hearing and sense of smell are very sharp: hence he recognizes you more by your voice and your odour than by your silhouette or your face.

At what age is a child’s hearing completely mature?
Already during the pregnancy baby has quite keen hearing for perceiving sounds coming from the outside. His hearing will continue to perfect itself to reach full maturity at around 5 years of age for high frequency sounds and 10 years for low frequencies.

What is the ideal toy for stimulating baby’s hearing from the age of 4 months onwards?
From 4 months onwards baby is able to grab hold of a rattle and shake it: he will be really delighted to note the cause and effect relationship between the impetus given by his hand and the resulting sound.

What type of songs are preferable for very young listeners?
Simple and gentle songs are easier for baby to follow. If they are also sung by children, he will easily be able to identify with them and eventually sing them himself.

Is it useful to get baby to listen to music during the pregnancy?
With effect from the seventh month of the pregnancy, baby can hear sounds coming from the outside. Melodious music may thus have a soothing effect on him and he may manifest his well-being by big, calm movements in your belly.

How does baby see at birth?
The very last of the senses to establish itself during the pregnancy, baby’s vision is still very imperfect at birth: baby’s sight is blurred, without relief or colour, and he does not tolerate strong lighting because his retina is not yet pigmented enough.

Around what age does baby clearly perceive different colours?
At birth baby sees in black and white. He perceives red and green at around two months of age, but it is not until he is around one year old that he will see the full range of colours clearly.

At what age can baby distinguish different facial expressions?
Baby’s sight is very blurred at birth and it gradually gets sharper. At around 4 months of age he is able to distinguish a sad face from a happy one.

At what age is a child’s sight completely mature?
At birth a baby’s sight is only 0.5/10. It slowly improves to reach 10/10 at around 4 years of age: the child thus sees perfectly both in terms of colour, as well as relief and the width of his visual field.

Why is it recommended to place yourself close to a newborn baby’s face to talk to them?
At birth baby’s sight is imperfect: he can make out objects and faces with a radius of barely 30 cm around him. In addition he has a very narrow field of vision: to talk to him you should, therefore, place yourself very close to him right in front of his field of vision.

On average, around what age do hide-and-seek type games interest baby?
In general, from around 7 months of age your baby will appreciate hide-and-seek with objects. Make his toys disappear and reappear under towels, or hide yourself then reappear again saying “peek-a-boo!” – Games like these will certainly make him laugh.
