In 1950, Paul Berthomé, the father of the current chairman, joined forces with a pharmacist and Laboratoires Expanscience was born. They became aware on talking to mothers that there was no alternative to soap when it came to baby hygiene, even though it was known to be drying and harsh on the skin.
At the time, the hygiene and skin care routine was time-consuming, whereas women’s lives were becoming increasingly modern. To respect their baby’s delicate skin, at each diaper change they had to add: soap, water, sweet almond oil and talc. The two men thus formulated a “2-in-1” product, an emulsion combining cleansing properties and softening qualities: a revolution!
The first cleansing lotion in Europe dedicated to baby hygiene would appear in 1950. Its texture, gentleness and extremely evocative and distinctly recognisable scent have become a real symbol of early childhood.
Ever since, Mustela has been taking into account new scientific advances and continually updating its formulas for the benefit of babies, their mothers and early childhood professionals.
Assuming the role of a pioneer, Mustela is behind numerous innovations that have marked the everyday lives of mothers and their babies in terms of skin care and skin disorders.
