Gentle formulae

It takes more than 18 months to develop and test each new Mustela product.
Before being included in a Mustela product, every ingredient must prove its efficacy, gentleness and good tolerance for the skin of both babies and mothers alike.
For gentle care of the delicate skin of babies, pregnant women and young mothers, Mustela has chosen the substances which are included in its products with the greatest of rigour.
- Obviously we only select ingredients authorised by European regulations.
- We then ask a committee of specialists to select the most effective and well-tolerated ingredients.
- Next, each formula is developed taking account of the specificities of the skin of babies – both healthy and problem skin – pregnant women and young mothers, in particular if they are breast-feeding.
All our products are hypoallergenic : our formulae exclude any irritant substances and the tests carried out by independent specialised laboratories must confirm their high tolerance and their affinity with the skin.
If all the safety conditions are met we select, in priority, natural origin ingredients such as, for example, chamomile, avocado sugars, etc.

All Mustela products keep for at least 30 months from their manufacture date. The use by date is indicated on packaging.
Thanks to carefully selected preservatives Mustela products remain safe and effective throughout the course of their use.
We pay particular attention to the good preservation of our products which is a safety guarantee for our users. We only select ingredients approved by the health authorities and which have proved their efficacy and harmlessness .
Not all Mustela ranges contain the same preservatives: our specialists choose the most suitable ones according to the general composition of the product, its method of use and the type of skin it is intended for.
- Some Mustela products contain preservatives from the paraben family which benefit from nearly fifty years hindsight of use. They are extremely effective against bacteria and fungus and very well-tolerated by babies and young mothers without any particular skin problems.
- Other ranges, intended for problem skin, are formulated with different preservatives.
- Last but not least, the Stelaprotect range dedicated to intolerant skin does not contain any preservatives but is packaged in “airless” containers which preserve the skin care products from contamination.

Bad preservation: beware of danger!
Products for babies are generally used in the bathroom in a hot and humid atmosphere which promotes the multiplication of bacteria and mould. If they contaminate the product, these germs can lead to infections with serious consequences for the user, particularly if it’s a baby.
For your safety, good preservation of our products is an absolute priority.

Because nothing can be too safe for the delicate skin of babies and mothers, Mustela has adopted a series of particularly strict and specific rules for the development of its products.
Rigorous regulations
Cosmetics are among the most controlled of everyday consumer products. Regulations common to the whole of Europe define notably, banned substances (more than 1000) and the maximum authorised concentration of some ingredients.
These regulations are regularly updated in the light of the latest scientific data. Mustela respects these directives and only selects ingredients whose use is validated by the health authorities.
Once cosmetic products are commercialised they are still subjected to very strict controls by the health authorities. They can be investigated at any moment, and in the event of a problem, taken off the market. Mustela is naturally subjected to these controls and collaborates closely with the authorities.
Tests for harmlessness
Before being adopted each of our formulae undergoes several tests to establish its perfect harmlessness : skin and eye tolerance tests, hypoallergenicity tests, phototoxicity tests, etc.
Teratogenicity evaluation
For our range aimed at pregnant women (Mustela 9 Months), tests are carried out under medical control and specific evaluations are carried out by an independent specialist: these products have to prove that they do not present any risk, either for the foetus during pregnancy or for the baby during breast-feeding.
Efficacy tests
We carry out clinical trials and/or usage tests under dermatological and/or paediatric control to assess the efficacy of our skin care products.
In parallel we carry out regular surveys with our users in order to be ensured of their satisfaction and to be able to develop our products according to their expectations.
Manufacturing controls
Once their composition has been validated our products are once again subjected to controls at different stages of the manufacturing process to check, in particular, that they have not been contaminated by bacteria and that their formula is stable.
Tamperproof packaging
Following their manufacture each individual skin care product is fitted with a tamperproof ring or clip to guarantee its freshness right up to when it is opened.
Cosmetovigilance
After being released on the market our products are still watched over by our cosmetovigilance department: if they are advised of any undesirable effect the product in question is immediately analysed to identify the origin of the problem and provide a solution.
