Yes, babies' skin is soft, but more than anything it is fragile and still developing. This is what our EV.E.I.L.S. program reveals. (EValuation of Early Infant Life/focus on Skin) is a first-of-its-kind scientific study on a global scale, which made three major discoveries about the development of infants' and toddlers' skin.
Immature skin
A skin barrier that is still fragile. Babies’ skin is more permeable and less well armed against external stressors. Its precious and unique cellular capital for life is present from birth, but it is particularly vulnerable during the first two years. It is therefore essential to protect it from the very first days.
Skin that becomes dehydrated faster
At birth, it is less able to absorb and retain water, so it becomes dehydrated more easily and faster than adult skin.
4 skin types in babies
There are four skin types with different characteristics: normal, dry, very sensitive and skin with a tendency to be atopic. This discovery has enabled us to guide the design of Mustela products with specific active ingredients perfectly suited to each skin type.
The different skin types
Normal skin
Normal skin: this is the famous “baby skin” that is often referred to: it is supple, soft and comfortable. And yet… it is permeable to external agents (pollution, bacteria, pollen) and constantly becomes dehydrated. During the first two years, it is essential to moisturize and protect it every day.

An innovative research methodology on reconstituted skin
As a specialty of our brand, we have reconstructed patented models of baby skin at various ages under the name Stelaskin®. Thanks to this innovation, we can conduct in-depth studies of different skin types, gain a better understanding of the effects of certain skin stressors, and evaluate and test our future products on these reconstituted skin models.
